Idea One - Why choose Naturism?

The first idea I have for a documentary is to follow the groups BN,British Naturism and see the reasons why they are part of the group and the difficulties they may face when it comes to people outside of the group and if there could be a possible link to mental health issues, focusing on the court case of the Naked Rambler, Stephen Gough- Who spent 6 years in prison, having been arrested on many occasions for public nudity.

If we make this documentary we would use observational mode and try to capture as much real life action as pobbible where the subject goes about their everyday lives as they normally would and they would show us how they live as a naturist and why it is they feel so strongly about exposing themselves and going against the norm.

Naturism is seen a cultural and political movement, which defends social nudity. It is seen to be based around the idea of returning to nature and creating equality starting around the 20th century in Germany.

Different types of naturism. Personal and family nudism; practised at home or in a garden. Social nudism: either at a person’s home with friends or with acquaintances at a nudist event or facility, such as a naturist club, community centre, or other facility.

There are many nude events which happen throughout the year. Nude beaches being the most recognised to society as a whole as in many foreign countires some tourists beaches are clothing optional, meaning the naturist society are involved with the rest of society. Some other beaches are given an official status of being a nudist beach. There are many other events suchas: Naked gardening day, naked bike ride, naked pumpkin run and nude New Year’s party.

What is an exhibitionist and are they more linked to naturism then people make out?

exhibitionists are people who like to expose themselves in public, this may arrise from the desire of compusion to expose themselves in such a manner to strangers or just friends. It is thought that when exhibitionism interfers with a persons quality of life it is described as a disorder.

Due to the fact that both naturism and exhibitionism are very similar they seem to be linked to a persons mind in seperate ways. Naturism is something which a person does because they feel comfortable without clothes whereas a exhibitionist feels compulsions and urges to be naked.

Idea two -

My second idea for a potential documentary is to follow a group of people who take part in Historical re-enactments.

This is a prearranged plan to recreate some aspects of a historical event or period, Re-enactments vary can be small by recreating a specific moment or on a larger scale by recreations entire battles, this depending on the society/ club you are in.

The idea is to focus on the people who attend these re-enactments and look at their lives outside of these events, their day to day lives.  What were their childhood like and their family relationships today?  What is their job?  We would like to get an insight into why they take part in historical re-enactment and what it brings to their lives which is otherwise not there.

I feel again this documentary could be made with the observational mode in mind where there is no presenter but we could possibly have a narrator at the points which are needed. It would be important for us to see the subjects in their daily routine talking us through what they do, how they feel about their lives. I imagine that they are talking at the camera, audience.

In the final part of the documentary is where we would get to see the re-enactment part, this could be portrayed as the subjects second life, their escape from reality. We would meet other people who take place in the re-enactments and be shown around and told what happens.

Idea three- Speed dating

Speed dating is a formalized match making process which helps people to meet a large amount of new people. The founder of speed dating was Rabbi Yaccov Beyo it was orignally a way for jewish singles to meet and marry. The first speed dating took place in Beverly Hills in 1998. Some may assume and feel that speed dating is for people who a socially weird when in fact the main type of people that go speed dating are normally people who have demanding jobs and lead busy lives that are unable to go out and meet new people on a normal basis.

People often think that it is not possible to meet a potential husband or partner and normally go speed dating just for the fun of it. People also feel that 5-7 minutes of talking to people is not enough time to get to know someone, so it is never really a true 'date' and it is relying on first impressions.

I reserached in to Malcolm Gladwell's book Blink which talks about rapid cognition, things that happen with a blink of an eye. It is also about intuition and first impressions and how these are important when meeting new people. This relates to speed dating as it shows us how first impressions do count for something.

If we were to do this for our documentary I feel that it would either work best in observational mode or partisipatory mode. We could take the documentary two ways, some of the group could take part in speed dating and investigate what happens at these events and whether or not they can be successful. The other way this documentary could work is to follow a primaries journey of speed dating and see the ups and downs of speed dating and why they may be single and have not found love yet.
